Mortal Engines

This is a personal project, a challenge I set to see if background art was something I could do. They were painted before the film was made, so I had no idea how their scenes would look. 'Mortal Engines' is a favourite book and I couldn't wait to start building up each scene, and researching grungy industrial sites and machinery. The images started as rough layouts, then line work, and then building up the colour and details. These are moody scenes and I really enjoyed playing with the light and shadows.
