My favourite places are old or unusual buildings. When I was a child my family visited historic houses like Little Moreton Hall in Cheshire; the difference to everyday life intrigued me, and I felt surrounded by the past. I love atmosphere and depth, and get joy from adding lighting to show mood and the shape of things. Detail is shown with small rough marks, I try not to get bogged down with any 'neatness'. If you look closely a detail is only a tangle of squiggles or little punchy dabs. Degas, Hockney and Ravilious are my favourite artists who paint places. I'm sure they must have an effect on the way I see a place.
